The expansion of the Network Software Center in Lisle, completed in 2001, consists of a 600,000 square foot research and development building to house 2,000 employees with 900 parking spaces in two parking garages located on the south side of the existing building.

The new building is composed of three parts: two five-story R & D wings arranged symmetrically around an entrance facility. The new entrance is linked directly to the existing building by an enclosed pedestrian bridge over the existing lake.

The architectural expression of the building attempts, through the use of state-of-the-art building technology, to embody a "glowing with light" image to represent the "high tech" equipment that Lucent produces. Perforated stainless steel sunshades on the south, east, and west facades permit extensive use of high performance, clear, low-emission glass. The use of clear glass permits light to permeate the work place and allow views not only from the building but also into the building. The wings of the building are angled to reduce the perception of length and to focus attention toward the entrance.
