This project was a competition for the world headquarters of The GAP in San Francisco. A series of designs for the clothing store chain headquarters illustrates the possibilities of different massing and expression, while conforming to the complicated zoning envelope prescribed for the site.
The schemes explore various combinations of towers and bases and show the impact of different materials on these forms. In some schemes, a special glass is proposed which, while allowing vision from the inside, also permits color or pattern to be applied over vision glass, as well as the spandrel glass, thus eliminating the traditional ribbon window or punched opening and rendering the whole building into an abstract sculptural form.
