CORNING INC. CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS

This headquarters project accommodates eight hundred employees, in a way which avoids a domineering presence in the town by creating a series of small pavilions along the river. A modular courtyard scheme, in which the geometry has been fragmented, is used to break up the apparent size of the building, which is then softened by extensive planting of shade trees.

Within the building, the courtyard idea is repeated: Skylit atria are used as nodes for vertical circulation between the two office levels and provide orienting destinations of light along the way, from one department to another.

The larger pavilion, at the center, contains the visitors' entry, auditorium, and the employee dining room and terrace, which have a view of the river and the company's other offices and museum on the opposite bank. Raising the ground floor five feet above the river's flood level allows employee parking to be provided under the building, directly beneath the office areas.

An additional pragmatic consideration, contributing to the form of the building, is the requirement to plan around existing buildings on the site, which cannot be demolished until the first phase is complete.

The lobby is completely enclosed in steel and glass. Its roof is reflective glass, supported by mirror-clad framing. This delicate, airy design is multiplied by using reflective glass in the same horizontal pattern for the interior walls; and the stairs, railings and mezzanine floor are also glass. The intended effect is to create a space which is in itself a study in glass without having to resort to color other than that provided by the reflected scintillation of the changing sky and trees.

The paving of the lobby repeats the modular paneling of the walls with rough and polished dark gray granite.
