This headquarters, which was built for a leading computer software company, is located in Scotts Valley, a coastal area south of San Francisco. Numerous studies of the site were conducted to arrive at an architectural approach which would minimize disturbance to the surrounding landscape and habitat, while capitalizing on the spectacular view of the valley.
The complex is composed of a series of interconnected units arranged around a central axial garden. These elements, which are oriented on the main long-distance view from the site, feature large expanses of glass and are articulated with deep trellised awnings and balconies.
The rhythm of awnings, walkways, trellises, and balconies break up the massing of the building and create a scale and character which is sympathetic to the regional architecture of that part of California.
A swimming facility plus tennis courts and gymnasium were incorporated for the staff of 1,900 and their families.
